If you often see flies in your garage, know that you are not the only one. Since the garage is frequently visited, this also paves the path for flies to enter in huge numbers. There are quite a few reasons why these pests can invade the premises and stay inside for a long time too.

They can carry fatal diseases and may cause a lot of trouble. In case you are wondering how to keep flies out of garage, there are a few simple tips that you can apply to get rid of them.

How to Identify Flies

In order to keep them away, you first need to identify the pests that make their way inside. Flies (also known as houseflies) are one of the most common insects in houses. They are often mistaken for other species of flies, such as cluster flies, and rightly so. They look pretty much the same, but they both can’t be dealt with the same way.

Houseflies are usually around one-fourth of an inch in size. They are usually black or grey and have stripes on their backs. They have two wings that are short and do not overlap. They can easily be found in most homes and garages.

Do Flies Impose Any Threat to Humans?

As such, flies are not that dangerous to humans. They are usually seen as a nuisance rather than deadly insects. However, because they might be carrying diseases, you should not let them stay in your garage or home. They can spread harmful pathogens, which may lead to numerous diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. To top it all off, these flies multiply in no time.

Are Flies Bad for Your Food?

People often see flies landing on their meals or hovering over dumpsters. If you were not so bothered by it in the past, well, you may need to pay more attention to the presence of these pests.

Houseflies often hover around trash cans and rotting substances. The germs from such harmful material can get attached to their body and may be carried to your table as well. It only takes them a second to transfer the bacteria to your food. However, the good news for you is that this much bacteria is not enough to make you sick.

What Are Flies Attracted to?

Flies are quite ubiquitous all over the world, including the USA. House flies feed and breed in rotting materials and are attracted to moisture and rotting organic matter. This is why they could be easily seen around trash cans, spoiled food products, and feces.

As with all other insects, they are attracted to dirty places. Dirty garages, open trash cans, and piles of papers can attract swarms of houseflies. Furthermore, research shows that they are attracted to the carbon dioxide you exhale. As long as you breathe, you cannot change that! This is why flies are often buzzing around your face. Furthermore, they land on your face and are attracted to sweat or tears too.

Why Is it So Hard to Swat a Fly?

Houseflies are not as fast as you might think. But they are so hard to kill because they see the world in slow motion. However, they can react quickly since their rate of perception and ability to react is way faster than humans. This is why a fly locates the swatter in a millisecond and reacts to it by moving to some other place, resulting in a swing and miss by swatter.

How to Keep Flies Out of Garage

In case you have been thinking about how to keep flies out of garage, you can follow a few simple tips and tricks.

Sanitize Your Garage

Since flies flourish in dirty environments, keeping your garage clean holds the utmost importance. If you have a trash can in your garage, make sure to empty it daily. Also, make sure that its top is covered with a lid or something if you don’t have a sealed one. Furthermore, immediately clean the grease or oil in case of leakage.

Use a Spray

Using a spray that is meant to eliminate the houseflies is also a great idea. These sprays are easily available in most home improvement stores and online stores. Spray it directly on the surface where you notice any fly activity. Also, make certain that the spray comes in contact with the flies, or else it will have no effect on them.

Mopping with Phenyl

Clean the floor of your garage daily with a mixture of phenyl and water. It will keep flies off the floor. As an alternative to phenyl, you can use camphor tablets as well. However, some people are allergic to the smell of camphor. All you need to do is make a solution of a few camphor tablets and water in a bucket and you are ready to go!

However, be mindful that camphor is not water-soluble. You’d have to melt it first to make its solution and mop the floor later. So we prefer phenyl mopping to camphor tablets.

Fix the Leakage

Leakage can attract house flies more than any other waste material. If there are any pipes in your garage, make sure that they don’t leak. As mentioned earlier, houseflies love moist areas as they lay their eggs in such environments. In case of leakage, reach out to a plumber to get the pipes fixed.

Set up a Trap

Last, but not least, use the house fly traps to get rid of the flies in your garage. There are a myriad of such traps available in the market and they don’t cost much either. For best results, make sure to place the trap properly.

It is a good idea to spend some time in your garage to observe their activity. Then bring the flytrap and place it at a point where flies spend most of their time. You can use light traps for this purpose as well since they attract the flies. Once they are all killed, make sure to dispose of their bodies so that they don’t attract other flies from their surroundings.

When the weather becomes warm, house flies just appear in garages out of nowhere and they don’t seem to disappear any sooner. The pests carry harmful bacteria and infect us by landing on our food and skin. However, you can effectively deal with them by applying the simple hacks. Just make it a habit to clean your garage regularly and use a fly repellent if they still show up.
