This fact has led many to wonder how to block radio waves. There are a number of dangers from electromagnetic waves, and finding a way to block them can be a valuable piece of information.
What is a Radio Wave?
Before focusing purely on the potential dangers, it helps to know what a radio wave is to begin with. The term itself comes from classical physics. An electromagnetic wave has different energy frequencies that all fall within the electromagnetic spectrum.
These waves make their way through space, and there are many that have actually been harnessed by science to create a diverse set of potentially useful functions. Radio waves, in particular, only occupy a small segment of that spectrum. That said, they include things like infrared and ultraviolet light, microwaves, gamma, and X-rays.
Just like electromagnetic waves, radio waves will produce what is known as an electromagnetic field (EMF). They also carry electromagnetic radiant energy, which is considered to be radiation that can be potentially damaging. This is just an overview of what these waves are and how they function within the electromagnetic spectrum.
How are Radio Waves Produced?
Whenever there is a direct electrical current that is applied to a wire, the flow of that electrical current flow builds a small electromagnetic field over the wire. That field then sends a wave that emanates outward from that wire.
When the current is then removed, the field will collapse but still send a wave. Should the current be applied and then removed repeatedly over a period of time, this is what creates a series of waves that are dispersed at a discrete frequency.
Should the current change its direction repeatedly, or its polarity, then that can also result in waves. This is all based on electromagnetivity and also is how transmitters manage to create radio waves.
The Dangers of Radio Waves
Before we can learn how to block radio waves, it helps to know what are the dangers of those waves. Throughout the years, there has been an implication that radio waves cause any number of different medical disorders and diseases.
There is even some anecdotal evidence that has suggested that radio waves may be linked to some forms of cancer. There is an increased risk for malignant brain cancer. This is known as glioma, and its connection has been tied to wireless phone use. The World Health Organization has also classified those radio frequencies as possibly carcinogenic.
There also have been some studies that link radio waves to electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). This is a condition where individuals are particularly sensitive when it comes to EMF. There is also a belief that EMF exposure is tied to both genotoxic and cytotoxic effects.
How to Block Radio Waves?
The good news is that if you are wanting to learn how to block radio waves, there are a few different materials that have been shown to be effective at doing the job. It also depends on where you live, as some areas are heavier with radio wave frequencies than others.
The good news, however, is that there are a number of materials that can work to get the job done, keeping you sheltered even in your home. Using dielectrics (which are basically insulators) or reflective materials works best. There is also the possibility of diverting them using electrical conductors.
Conductors and dielectrics can have a significant impact on stopping the transmission of electromagnetic waves.
It is important to note that dielectrics will allow radio waves to pass through, though dielectrics do reflect and absorb a tremendous amount of the radio wave’s power.
When that moving wave comes into direct contact with the dielectric material, that material will retain the same amount of power that the radio wave does, which ultimately transforms into power and disperses it through the use of heat energy.
If you have a dielectric surface that is a silvered mirror, it will reflect as much as 95 percent of the radio power while absorbing the other 5 percent. Some radio radiation can also bounce off of a clear glass window, though the majority of them go right through.
Some of the other dielectric substances are plastic, Teflon, paper, wood, and ceramic. Pure liquid water will also make for a great dielectric as well. Just consider one thing. Since dielectrics allow large amounts of electromagnetic radiation to pass right through them, the dielectric has to be really thick in order to have the desired impact. So, using a single sheet of paper or a light coating of water isn’t going to do much.
Dielectrics are basically non-metallic, whereas conductors are things like aluminum, gold, and copper. Conductors will capture the bulk of the electromagnetic radiation that they will come into contact with, though they can do a great job at diverting it and keeping it from getting into your home.
Even better, conductive materials don’t have to be nearly as thick as dielectrics do. You could get away with substantially less conductor material than dielectric material.
Though the evidence relating radio waves to certain health impacts is somewhat anecdotal, it can never hurt to be safe. When it comes to eliminating radio waves in your life, a few helpful suggestions can go a long way.
It depends on where you live and what materials you are using to block out those waves. It doesn’t hurt to have a few protective measures in place even if you don’t fully adhere to the aforementioned anecdotal evidence.
